I looked at it for a minute, I know how the chip works, so I assume that it takes the remote signal from any device, TV, DVD, radio or what you have. It sends a signal to the circuit to switch the appliance on and off, it can be a fan or maybe a light that plugs straight to your socket outlet, but you now have remote control of that socket outlet, embedded in your circuit, I wouldn't advise embedding this circuit to your actual home socket outlet.
